At the turn of the century, world's fairs and expositions were a favorite subject for the emerging motion picture industry. The films collected here are views of three of the major expositions of the era. Also included are two early films from Luna Park at Coney Island and a reenactment of the Boer War at Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. The films offer a unique opportunity to view the architecture of expositions, the inclusion of indigenous peoples, and the historic reenactments of the era.

1904 St. Louis World's FairThese films are reproduced from the Paper Print Collection at the Library of Congress. Beginning in 1894, paper copies of films were sent to the Library of Congress for copyright registration. In many cases, the paper prints were the only copies of these films to survive until the 1950s, when they were re-photographed onto safety film. The films have been re-mastered onto videotape, but the picture quality of many reflects their age and the fact that they are the product of a paper intermediate stage. They are presented silent and in their entirety. Twenty-one films are included, shot at the following expositions: Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1900; Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901; Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, 1904; and at Coney Island in 1902 and 1903 and Brighton Beach in 1905.     [order]
