BLUE ALCHEMY: STORIES OF INDIGO
What is indigo? It is a blue dye that has
been in use worldwide for millennia; a vibrant color laden with symbolic meaning; a commodity that was once
central to international trade and colonial economies; and the reason that blue jeans are blue. BLUE
ALCHEMY is a feature length documentary that will explore the history and reveal the beauty and importance
of indigo. It will weave stories about geography and culture, interviews with artists, artisans, and
historians, and images of villagers using the dye into a video tapestry. The story will be told in a
non-linear manner. Historical and present-day sequences will be inter-cut to reinforce indigo's roots in
the past and its relevance to the present. Interviews, text on screen, photos and historical images,
narration, and music will combine to present the multiple facets of indigo. Mary Lance, an award-winning
producer/director with extensive experience in documentary production, is the filmmaker.
